8 Simple Packing Tips to Streamline Your Household Move

Moving houses is not something most people look forward to as it is a time-consuming and often tedious process, however, it does not have to be like this. There are many things to do to ensure the move is more enjoyable and relatively stress-free. Being organized and breaking it down into smaller pieces and not looking at the whole project creates an experience that allows you to be excited about your new beginning.

When preparing your current home to be packed up whether it be by you or a moving company there are some simple tricks you can employ to make packing up your personal belongings much easier. Professional movers can provide you with the boxes or pack them and shift them to your new residence for you. Whether you are doing it on your own or hiring professionals here are some tips to help.

  1. Purchase Proper Boxes

While it may be tempting to go in search of free used boxes from places like grocery stores this is not always the best idea when planning a move. Though boxes designed specifically for packing and moving are not super cheap they are worth the expense for a number of reasons. Well-made boxes fit together nicely and do not fall apart mid-move. It speeds up the process while taking up less space and actually saving money.

  1. Consider Clear Containers

Most of your household belongings can fit nicely into your newly purchased moving boxes but there are some items that are better in plastic see-through containers. An added bonus to using these for the move is they are perfect for any storage you may need in the new house. Items like Christmas decorations and other seasonal gear can be closed up until they are needed. Also containers are easy to lift during a move.

  1. Choose Box Sizes Wisely

Though it may seem the size of boxes you use will not make any real difference on the big day this is not the case. Picking ones that are on the larger side often means they are too heavy when packed fully and awkward to lift. Going with too small ones means the mover must make extra trips back and forth to the moving truck. Make sure you have boxes that are not too small or too large but just right.

  1. Use Blankets and Towels

When filling the boxes and containers with your household belongings you are likely to find the items do not always fit together nicely. You might also find them getting on the heavy side which makes them difficult to lift. This is where things like blankets, towels and other soft bedding and linen come in. They are great for filling in spaces as well as protecting fragile and easily broken items while you are packing them away.

  1. Plastic Garbage Bags

Large black bags may not be the first thing that comes to mind when planning your move but they can come in quite handy. Just be sure when you buy them to get the stronger more industrial ones so they do not rip or fall apart. Use them for packing things like clothing, bedding, towels and any other soft items. They are also great for filling empty spaces in the moving truck.

  1. Only Keep Essentials Out

As the moving day gets closer but you are still living in the home there are things you can do to make this phase of the move less awkward. It is still important to keep packing and cleaning however this can be difficult when still cooking meals and having showers. At this point make a decision to keep only things that are essential to daily living out and box everything else away.

  1. Pack into a Room

When you are still living in the home but trying to pack some of your belongings up it is a good idea to choose a room or two that get less traffic and use them to organize and stack the boxes and containers. This way you are not tripping over them as you continue to live.

  1. Prepare for the Movers

Even if you are not packing your own belongings but instead are hiring a moving company there are still steps to take to prepare for moving day and to make the mover’s jobs easier. Make sure the home is clean and organized before they arrive and do not have clutter or miscellaneous items lying around the home.
